Nieuwe DesertX 890 V2 verwacht op EICMA 2025?

Ducati’s 890 cc V2 – the new heart of the DesertX and Monster (from 2026)

In 2025, Ducati takes the next step in its engine evolution: the 890 cc V2 engine, which already powers the Panigale V2, Streetfighter V2, and Multistrada V2, is expected to also be introduced in the DesertX and Monster in 2026. This marks Ducati’s definitive farewell to the familiar 937 cc Testastretta 11° engine, which for years formed the core of the V-twin range.

The lightest Ducati twin-cylinder engine ever

Weighing only about 54.4 kg, the new V2 engine is the lightest large twin-cylinder engine Ducati has ever produced. The design has been completely revised: a compact semi-monocoque frame mounting point, integrated water-oil cooling, and aluminum cylinder liners contribute to lower weight and higher efficiency. Maintenance intervals are also extended: valve clearance checks every 45,000 km and oil changes every 15,000 km.

From Desmodromic to conventional

For the first time since the 1970s, Ducati moves away from the iconic Desmodromic system. Instead, the 890 V2 engine uses conventional valve springs, combined with a modern variable intake and ignition timing. The result: less internal friction, easier maintenance, and smoother power delivery. The engine produces around 120 hp at 10,750 rpm and 93 Nm at 8,250 rpm, with an emphasis on usable midrange torque.

Proven performance in the Panigale, Streetfighter, and Multistrada V2

The engine has already proven itself in three key Ducati models. In the Panigale V2, it excels with linear throttle response; in the Streetfighter V2, it delivers aggressive midrange power; and in the Multistrada V2, it offers comfort and smoothness for long distances. This success forms the basis for expansion to the adventure-oriented DesertX and the renewed Monster series.

New DesertX 890 V2 expected at EICMA 2025

According to various European and American motorcycle publications, the Ducati DesertX 890 V2 is already in an advanced stage of development. Spy photos show a prototype with the new engine and an adapted frame and swingarm. Ducati is expected to officially present the new DesertX generation in November 2025 during the EICMA Milan.

Accessories and tuning for the V2 models

The aftermarket is also preparing for this transition. At GeGShop.nl you can already find a growing range of accessories for Ducatis with the V2 engine, including:

The future of Ducati’s twin-cylinder line

The arrival of the 890 cc V2 engine marks the beginning of a modular engine architecture that will appear in more and more Ducatis. From sport to adventure and naked bikes: the V2 engine combines lower emissions, higher torque, and easier maintenance. A modern masterpiece that remains true to the spirit of Bologna but is ready for the future.
