Wheel Cleaner for Brake Dust, Road Dirt, and Fly Rust

Safely clean engine and car wheels with a product suited to the contamination and existing surface finish

Wheels are constantly exposed to brake dust, chain grime, oil, tar, and road dirt. Especially warm brake dust can firmly adhere to paint, powder coating, and other finishes. With a suitable wheel cleaner, this contamination is loosened before you touch the wheel with a wash mitt or brush.

  • Wheel cleaners for maintenance and more intensive cleaning
  • pH-neutral and acid-free formulas available
  • Iron removers for brake dust and fly rust
  • Gel and spray formulas for different applications
  • Products from Monello, D-Con, and Chemical Guys

In this collection, you will find both regular maintenance cleaners and products that chemically react with iron-containing contamination. Choose the type of cleaner based on the wheel material, surface finish, and severity of the contamination.

Maintenance Cleaner or Iron Remover

A regular wheel cleaner loosens dirt, grease, and brake dust and is suitable for recurring maintenance. Chemical Guys Diablo Wheel Cleaner Gel, for example, is a concentrated pH-neutral gel that can be used at various dilutions.

An iron remover such as Monello Non-Ferro or D-Con V4 specifically reacts with iron particles from brake dust and fly rust. During this reaction, the product may turn purple or red.

Check the Wheel Finish

Wheels can be painted, polished, powder-coated, chrome-plated, anodized, or made of carbon. Not every powerful cleaner is automatically suitable for every untreated or sensitive finish.

Always check the product instructions and test on an inconspicuous spot if in doubt. Do not use products that intentionally leave gloss enhancers on matte or satin wheels.

Work on a Cool Wheel

Allow wheels and brakes to cool completely before applying cleaner. On a hot surface, the product can dry too quickly and leave uneven spots.

Preferably work in the shade and clean one wheel at a time. Never let wheel cleaner dry on the surface.

Use Separate Tools

Use a separate microfiber wash mitt, brush, and bucket for wheels. This prevents sharp brake dust and chain grease from later contaminating paint, tank, or fairings.

A compact wheel mitt is practical for spokes and hard-to-reach areas. Use a soft brush around painted or carbon surfaces.

Be Careful Around Brake Parts and Tires

Rinse the wheel thoroughly after the dwell time. Do not leave any cleaner or loosened dirt on brake discs, calipers, tires, or valves.

Check before driving that brake discs and tires are clean and dry. Never apply wax, dressing, or other slippery care products on brake surfaces or the tread of a motorcycle tire.

Protect Wheels After Cleaning

After thorough cleaning, a suitable wheel wax or coating can help prevent brake dust and road dirt from strongly adhering to the finish again.

Degrease the wheel first if required for the chosen protection and check whether wax or coating is suitable for a matte, satin, glossy, or carbon finish.
