Coolant reservoirs for reliable cooling and neat finishing
Replace a damaged reservoir or give your motorcycle's cooling system a high-quality, model-specific upgrade.
- Safely collects expanding coolant
- Helps maintain a stable coolant level
- Model-specific fit and connections
- Suitable as a replacement or technical upgrade
- Available in various materials and designs
The coolant reservoir is an important part of a motorcycle's cooling system. As it warms up, the coolant expands and excess fluid is directed from the closed cooling system to the reservoir. When the engine cools down, the coolant can be drawn back. This keeps the system properly filled and prevents unnecessary loss of coolant.
A cracked, discolored, or leaking reservoir should therefore be replaced in time. Even a small damage can cause the coolant level to drop or the cooling system to draw in air. In this collection, you will find coolant reservoirs for various motorcycles, from functional replacement parts to high-quality aftermarket versions with a sportier finish.
Replacement of the original coolant reservoir
Original plastic reservoirs can become brittle or dull due to age, heat, UV radiation, and vibrations. Mounting points can also crack or hose connections may start leaking. A suitable replacement reservoir restores the cooling system’s function and prevents you from continuing to ride with a part whose condition is no longer reliable.
When choosing a new reservoir, it is important that the capacity, connections, and mounting points match the motorcycle. A reservoir that physically fits approximately is not automatically technically suitable. The position of the vent, the height of the hose connection, and the available space behind fairing parts can vary greatly per model.
Aluminium and transparent reservoirs
Depending on the application, coolant reservoirs are available in plastic, transparent materials, or aluminium. A transparent reservoir allows quick checking of the coolant level. Aluminium reservoirs are mainly chosen for their robust construction, heat resistance, and high-quality appearance.
For a non-transparent version, the coolant level must be checked in another way, for example via a sight glass, dipstick, or prescribed filling procedure. Always check how the level is read on the chosen reservoir.
Installation and checking the coolant level
Install the reservoir only in the intended position and use the correct coolant hoses and hose clamps. The hoses must not be kinked, dried out, or damaged. After installation, check that all connections are leak-free and that hoses do not touch hot or moving parts.
Fill the reservoir only up to the level indicated by the motorcycle manufacturer or the reservoir manufacturer. Too much coolant can be pushed out of the reservoir during warming up. Too low a level can cause the cooling system to draw back insufficient fluid when cooling down.
Frequently asked questions about coolant reservoirs
Is a coolant reservoir the same as an expansion tank?
For motorcycles, the terms coolant reservoir, expansion reservoir, and expansion tank are often used for the same part. Technically, the reservoir collects coolant that expands due to heat and can later flow back to the cooling system.
Can I install any reservoir on my motorcycle?
No. The capacity, connections, mounting position, and function must be suitable for the motorcycle. Preferably choose a model-specific reservoir.
Why is the level in my coolant reservoir dropping?
A dropping level can be caused by a leak, a faulty radiator cap, a loose hose clamp, evaporation, or a technical problem in the cooling system. Do not just top up, but also check why the level is dropping.
Do I need to bleed the cooling system after installation?
If only the external reservoir is replaced and the closed cooling system has not been opened, full bleeding is not always necessary. If coolant has been drained from the system or radiator hoses have been disconnected, follow the bleeding procedure prescribed by the motorcycle manufacturer.
Which coolant should I use?
Always use coolant that meets the specifications of the motorcycle manufacturer. Do not mix different types or colors arbitrarily, as the chemical composition may differ.
