Decat Pipes and Catalytic Converter Replacements for Motorcycle Exhausts

Replace the original catalytic converter with a model-specific exhaust connection for a more direct Racing setup

The catalytic converter is an important part of the original emission and exhaust system on modern motorcycles. A decat pipe, catalytic converter replacement, or decat header set takes the place of this original catalytic converter. This creates a different exhaust configuration with less material, an adjusted gas flow, and generally a noticeably more powerful exhaust sound.

  • Model-specific replacement of the original catalytic converter
  • Individual decat pipes, linkpipes, and complete header sets
  • Can save weight compared to the original construction
  • More direct and pronounced exhaust sound
  • Exhaust systems from brands including QD, HP Corse, and Competition Werkes

In this collection, you will find various types of decat solutions. A single decat pipe is installed between the original headers and muffler, replacing the section containing the catalytic converter. For other motorcycles, a more extensive header set is required, or the decat is part of a complete sport exhaust system.

Because the shape of the original exhaust, the position of the lambda sensors, and the connection diameters vary per motorcycle, these parts are model- and year-specific. Always check whether the product is intended for use with the original muffler or only with a specific aftermarket exhaust.

What changes with a decat?

Removing the catalytic converter changes the resistance and acoustic damping in the exhaust system. The result is usually a louder and rougher exhaust sound. Depending on the original construction, a significant weight reduction can also occur, especially when a large catalytic converter box is replaced by a compact linkpipe.

The impact on power, torque, and throttle response varies greatly depending on the motorcycle and exhaust configuration. Therefore, do not assume a general power gain. Only when a manufacturer provides measured values for a specific product can those be used as an indication for that version.

Mapping and engine management

A changed exhaust flow can affect the air-fuel ratio and the operation of the engine management system. Some decat products allow the engine to run with the standard mapping, while others recommend ECU optimization or a custom mapping.

Always check this on the product page and have the tuning checked on a test bench if in doubt. An engine running too lean or erratically will not benefit from a freer exhaust system. The position and operation of the lambda sensors must also be maintained as prescribed by the manufacturer of the decat product.

Check usage and homologation

A decat removes a part of the original emission system. Therefore, do not automatically assume approval for use on public roads. Several products are explicitly offered as Racing versions or without E-mark certification. Even if a separate muffler is homologated, that homologation may only apply in combination with the original catalytic converter.

Install new exhaust gaskets when prescribed and check all connections for leaks after installation. Ensure the exhaust is free from fairing parts, cables, and brake lines, and recheck the mounts after the system has been fully warmed up several times.
