Fuel Pump Contact Points – Honda Hawk 650

  • Keep the original pump: replace only the contact points
  • Significant savings compared with a complete new pump
  • Proven quality: Honda pumps last 30+ years
  • Simple repair using basic tools (screwdriver + soldering iron)
  • Reliably builds fuel pressure again right away

The fuel pumps on the Honda Hawk 650 are virtually indestructible. It often seems as though the pump has failed, but in reality, only the contact points are worn. With this replacement kit, you can give your original pump a second life without expensive aftermarket replacements that do not last as long.

Why replace the contact points?

After years of use, the points wear out or burn. As a result, the pump switches irregularly or stops working altogether. Replacing the contact points often allows the original pump to continue running trouble-free for many years.

How do I recognize burned contact points?

Below you can see a new set; the marked section should be flat and round, not burned:
If they are burned (pieces are missing or they are worn at an angle), they must be replaced. This component is a wear part because the spark repeatedly jumps across it, so this is simply normal wear.

Brief installation instructions

  1. Remove the black end cap (1 screw).
  2. Disconnect the old contact points (2 screws + 1 soldered wire).
  3. Install the new set and solder the wire back in place.
  4. Replace the cap and start the engine: the pump will work again.

When is the pump actually faulty?

Only if the diaphragm is defective. You can still hear the pump clicking, but it does not build up pressure. This is very rare.

Relay or contact points?

Many riders are unsure whether the problem is the pump or the relay. Here is how to tell the difference:

  • Fuel pump relay defective: you hear no sound from the pump at all, and no voltage reaches it either. Measure it to know for sure.
  • Contact points worn: the pump sometimes clicks and sometimes does not, or clicks very irregularly. Replacing the points almost always solves this.
  • Pump diaphragm defective: the pump clicks normally, but no fuel comes out. Only in this case is the pump itself faulty.

Original beats aftermarket

Aftermarket pumps may seem inexpensive, but they rarely match the reliability of an original Honda pump. With this contact point kit, you retain OEM quality and save money.

FAQ

Do I need to know how to solder?

Yes, one wire must be soldered back in place. This is easy to do with a basic soldering iron.

How quickly will I notice the result?

Immediately: the pump switches properly again, and your Hawk starts and runs as it should.

Does this kit fit all Hawk 650 pumps?

Yes, it is suitable for the original Honda Hawk 650 1988-1991 fuel pump.

In short: with this contact point kit, you can restore your original Hawk 650 pump to top condition – reliable, durable, and much more affordable than replacing the complete pump.
